Atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema, is a common skin condition that can affect people of all ages, although it is prevalent in babies and children. Atopic dermatitis most often begins before age five and may persist into adolescence and adulthood. For some people, it flares periodically and then clears up for a time, even for several years.
Most cases can be controlled with a customized skin care plan that may involve moisturizers, prescription medications and strategies to eliminate triggers, such as soaps, some foods or certain fabrics.
These tips may help prevent flare ups:
Moisturize at least twice a day.
Identify and avoid triggers that worsen the condition.
Take shorter baths or showers and use warm, not hot, water.
Use mild soaps.
Dry carefully by patting the skin.
